Sweet Victory

466212-victoryEaster is coming “early” this year, which happens to put it right in the thick of what is known as “March Madness,” the national U.S. collegiate basketball tournament.  As fans of college basketball know, it’s called March Madness because you never know what might happen in these games.  And last weekend was no an exception to that.

Sunday night, the three seed in the West region Texas A&M was down 12 points with 44 seconds left in the game to Northern Iowa, a school that had won its last game with an incredible shot from half court that happened to go in.  Statistically, according to those mathematicians who can figure out stuff like this, Texas A&M’s win probability was 0% at that moment.  In other words, they had no chance to win the ballgame.  It was over.

Then, in a flurry of turnovers leading to dunks and one made three pointer, the score was tied.  Texas A&M would go on to win the game in double overtime.  No one could believe what they had just witnessed and many people are still talking about it even now.  Click here for a detailed look at exactly what happened in those final seconds.

In a situation astronomically more important than a basketball game, a similar scenario played out over 2000 years ago.  On Good Friday, the Son of God was nailed to a cross, where He suffered in agony and died.  The sky went dark and He was taken off the cross and put in a borrowed tomb.  His closest disciples had ran away and hid and one of his closest friends, Peter, had denied several times that he even knew Jesus.  To everyone watching, it seemed over.  The win probability here was clearly zero.

But on Sunday, it was time for a great comeback!  Jesus rose from the dead and in the process gave us our own victory over death.  His resurrection took those fearful and hiding followers and transformed them into bold and courageous witnesses who would end up being faithful to their testimony even to their own deaths as martyrs.

Jesus’ resurrection proves to us that He is and will always be victorious.  No matter what is going on in our lives; what struggles we are going through; how far behind it seems that we are on the scoreboard, Jesus is going to pull out the victory.  His win probability is always 100%.  I wrote a song called “Victorious” which will be on my new album coming out in the next few months.  I wanted to share it with you today as we consider the great news of Easter.  He is risen!
