Unafraid

Unafraid is really the song that the “Fear Not” album revolves around and flows from. I wrote the song from idea sparked from a single line in a song from Tenth Avenue North called “Strong Enough to Save.” The line says, “Fear is just a lie.” I had never really thought of fear that way – as a lie – and therefore, as sin. It is sinful to fear because God has not given us a spirit of fear. Although I didn’t see this video before writing Unafraid, Mike Donehey (lead singer for Tenth Avenue North) explains why he used that lyric:

The words for Unafraid really came from a place of frustration for me. Realizing that fear is sinful and a lie, why was I so fearful of completely trusting in God? Why didn’t I reach out in love to people in need out of fear? Why was I afraid to tell others about my hope in Christ? If I knew the truths of the Bible, why was I stuck in the lie of fear?

As I wrote the other songs that appear on Fear Not, I noticed that many of them had to do with fear in one way or the other. From the obvious in “I’ve Got it Under Control,” to the fear of the future in “Other Plans,” to all the fears and struggles of life in “He Has Overcome.” “Fear Not/Do Not Be Afraid” is the most often repeated commandment in Scripture. And Paul puts it plainly in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Verse one:
I say that I believe the promises of God
Most of them I could recite to you
But living out my life
I don’t act as if they’re true

My light stays hidden safely where not too many see
Worried about lots of stuff that seems unclear
Can’t be the man I should be
And it’s all because of fear

Chorus:
Unafraid. I want to be unafraid.
Fear is a lie of the enemy
May Your perfect love drive it out of me
Unafraid. I want to be unafraid
To bring love and hope to those in need
Secure that You’ll take care of me
Unafraid.

Verse two:
Fear not the angels said time and time again
It’s time I started taking their advice
Put my full weight on Your Word
Stop being scared of lies
There’s people all around me that need to know Your love
Everybody goes through times of rain
Gonna get my own hands dirty
And start to make a change

Chorus:
Unafraid. I want to be unafraid.
Fear is a lie of the enemy
May Your perfect love drive it out of me
Unafraid. I want to be unafraid
To bring love and hope to those in need
Secure that You’ll take care of me
Unafraid.

Bridge:
Time to live boldly for Your glory
Walk through the fire if that’s Your plan
Oughta be strong and courageous
Cause my life is in Your hands

Bridge Two:
If to live is Christ and to die is gain
I have nothing to fear by Your holy name.
