He Has Overcome

I wrote “He Has Overcome” during a trip to the North Carolina mountains one spring. Looking out at the mountain peaks and how massive they were, I was struck by how massive and powerful God is. As impressive as the mountains are, they are an insignificant speck of dust in relation to the whole universe. And still God knows every little detail about me and hears every prayer I utter. I just can’t truly wrap my brain around that. What a great God!

But what does that greatness mean to us? At its core, it means that there is nothing in this world that can possibly be too big or bad for God to handle. And He proved the relationship He desires with us by becoming fully man in Christ Jesus and living here on this earth among us. He had to deal with life’s troubles just like we do, but He lived a perfect sinless life and overcame death and the enemy. The main lyric of this song uses Jesus’ own words to sum up this idea. From John 16:33, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Have you had another one of those days
Feeling like you don’t measure up or belong
And life’s become a big unsolvable maze
Where even you and yourself just can’t get along
Just remember when your path’s strewn with failures
And you don’t feel smart or handsome enough
In this world there’s gonna be troubles
But He has overcome

Jesus has overcome the world
and He sees the struggles that you’re facing
He has the power to make a mountain range
but He hears every word you’re praying
So no matter what temporary struggles make this world seem tough
Never forget that He has overcome

Ever since you heard the news from the doctor
You’ve been fighting each day just to get through the pain
And you’re not sure you can make it much farther
Cause you don’t even have the strength left to complain
But even though your body’s in shambles
There’s a promise you can draw power from
In this world there’s gonna be troubles
But He has overcome

Jesus has overcome the world
and He knows each of our secret fears
He has a mansion waiting just for us
in a land where there’s no more tears
So no matter what temporary struggles make this world seem tough
Never forget that He has overcome

When the evil in this world tries to rob you of your joy and peace
Be brave
God is on the throne
He’s already won, He’s already won

When your burdens get too heavy to bear
And the big and little problems are getting you down
When you can’t find anyone else who cares
And all the plans that you made are running aground
Even if everything around you crumbles
Just close your eyes and thank the Lord above
In this world there’s gonna be troubles
But He has overcome
